Needle Sizes 101: What Every Artist Should Know

Whether you’re new to the world of permanent makeup or just need a quick refresher, understanding the basics of needle types can really help you feel more confident in your technique and results. There’s a lot to explore when it comes to needle configurations, but today I just want to give you a simple breakdown of three common categories you’ll hear about often: round liners, round shaders, and magnums.

Let’s keep it simple.

Round liners are exactly what they sound like. These needles are grouped in a tight circle and are designed to create crisp, clean lines. They’re often used for fine detail work, outlines, or any part of the brow that needs precision. If you love a sharp tail or a defined shape, chances are a round liner played a role in getting that look.

Round shaders are also arranged in a circular configuration but with a little more spacing between the needles. This allows for softer fills and more diffused pigment placement. They’re great for adding density and softness, especially through the body of the brow. Think of shaders as your go-to for layering and building soft blends.

Magnum needles are arranged in a stacked or flat row and are made for coverage. They’re ideal for working on larger areas, creating gradients, or when you want to deliver a lot of pigment efficiently without overworking the skin. With the right pressure and movement, magnums can create beautifully smooth transitions.

As with any part of your PMU journey, choosing the right tool comes down to your technique, the client’s skin, and the result you’re aiming for.
